Common Problems: Plantar Fasciitis

This month at Fine Form Physio we take a look at Plantar Fasciitis.
What is Plantar Fasciitis
An overuse condition causing inflammation and degeneration of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a type of connective tissue which is important in providing support for the arch of the foot. The main role of the Plantar Fascia is to reduce impact/load when running and jumping.
What causes Plantar Fasciitis?
Overuse or improper training program
Weakness and tightness in calves
Foot pronation (rolling in) due to flat feet
Weight gain
Improper foot wear or orthotics
Prognosis: 6-12 weeks depending on severity
Physiotherapy treatment:
Soft tissue massage: calves, tibilias posterior and foot intrinsic muscles
Dry needling
Suction cupping
Taping (Kinesio or rigid tape)
Strength training for calves and foot intrinsic muscles
Assessing other factors such as hips and leg length differences.
Adjusting gym program to reduce load on heel
At Fine Form Physio we assess feet using a gait scan system. Through this device we can order in custom orthotics to reduce the load and pain in your feet. If you are experiencing any pain in your heel please come in for an assessment and treatment plan!
