FITNESS New Year Resolutions
We have all done it, come January, we set massive, unrealistic new year resolutions, usually around losing weight and getting fit. A new year is a great time for a fresh start, but it's important to have a plan so that you don't fail.
Here are some ways to avoid common traps and set yourself up for success.
Firstly, it's brilliant that you have identified and acknowledged that your fitness needs to improve, or you're carrying a little bit of unhealthy extra weight. You don't want to lose that desire and drive for change.
Secondly, it's important to remember, that a new year resolution is not a short term, quick fix plan. It is essentially making a promise for 2022. It doesn't all have to happen in January. Plan by looking at where you would like to be by the end of 2022. Let's say you want to lose 20kg, that seems like such a daunting number. But breaking it down in to mini plans of 5kg at a time will make it seem much more achievable and easier to stick to, start with making one or two changes to your lifestyle and/or eating habits for January, then another one or two during February and so on and so forth. This gradual approach won't seem so overwhelming.
Some ideas are to simply go on a 5km walk twice a week, having a daily steps target, lifting weights once or twice a week or cutting out treats on weekdays.
Small changes are manageable, and you are more likely to succeed.
Lastly, get some advice. If you know what you want to achieve but don't know where to start, a fitness coach like a personal trainer is a great place to start. A trainer can help you set mini goals and draw up a plan around how to achieve them. If food is a problem, then a nutritionist would be an invaluable source.
Break those bad habits and implement new ones with small, gradual changes and you will be on your way to hitting those goals in no time.
